It all started with this cosby sweater

Hello, my name is Judith. My husband, Yonatan, and I run make her say DUH, a custom jewelry and engagement ring boutique in Beverly Hills. We’ve decided a blog might be fun and we love fun. I’ll be blogging here about what it’s like to be dripping in diamonds (hint: fun), our process of creating jewelry and running the business while staying happily married.

Let’s begin by introducing The Dowry Collection, our new art deco diamond engagement ring collection. Full disclosure, it’s actually my second dowry collection. The first one started with a cosby sweater, pictured above. I found it 7 years ago, when I was a girl of 23. I just knew my future husband would look amazing in it. So I bought it and referred to it as my Dowry. I found a couple more garments that I was sure would look great on my future husband. My best friend gently told me that having one piece of clothing for my future husband was cute and quirky, but two pieces was crazy. I am not sure she had seen Me and You and Everyone We Know, which was the primary inspiration for my Dowry journey.

So years later, I met Yonatan in the fall in ATL and he was reaaaal cute and funny and talented and sweet…  And I didn’t even want to fall in love with him because what kind of idiot falls in love with an artist? But it got cold and I was like hey do I have the sweater for you and he tried it on and it looked … Perfect.

And then a couple months later into us dating, while I was still trying to figure out how to ask questions about like, you know, financial priorities and medical history – he opened the ring box. And I’m looking at this gorgeous diamond engagement ring made just for me with so much love, planning, thought and commitment. And the part in me that had doubt was overshadowed by clarity. So he was like, “Will You Ma-” and I was like, “Duuuuuh.”

duh

And then we moved to Los Angeles and he continued to make custom engagement rings. And eventually we decided to curate our own collection of designs we thought were so beautiful they would be worthy of a Dowry. Except this time if you buy more than one we definitely won’t call you crazy.

On a deeper level, the reason The Dowry Collection feels like a perfect name for these engagement rings – is because of what marriage is right now. It’s 2016 and we’re based in Los Angeles here people, where everything about marriage is a choice – who it’s to, what it is and if you even do it or not. And yet, in our custom jewelry work we’ve seen a lot of demand for vintage inspired rings because they have that feel of your grandmother’s ring – of history, of a rooted family, of being the chosen cousin to win the prized heirloom and carry on the tradition. So, we’re seeing people fighting for the fresh and craving the rooted, wanting the best of both. And if marriage can be redefined – then so can a dowry. Maybe it’s about a bride price in Babylon… or maybe it’s about a cosby sweater in ATL. The Dowry Collection is about the fact that something old can also be so, so new.

We have been working on The Dowry Collection for almost a year now and we’re sooo excited to launch it. You can view it on our site now and I’ll be going into the process of designing each ring in the coming weeks. Thanks for reading and stay tuned!

This jewelry is so special – obviously created by an artist, not mass produced. How special that makes it! Art Deco is one of my favorite periods for exquisite jewelry I call it “Aesthetics Ahead of its Time” – beautifully made, special and with great attention to detail and that describes this collection perfectly. BTW he does look good in the Cosby sweater LOL and that’s not an easy feat. Love, best wishes and I can’t wait to own one (actually a girl needs plenty of jewelry so make that own the ones I love in each collection ). Will definitely watch for your postings.
